INVESTMENTS
The GADK has invested over US$1 million collectively in projects in Uganda and Kenya over the past 3-5 years. The main projects have been in education, culture, sports, health, community engagement and business ventures, notably the establishment of a brick making factory. Through these investments, the GADK is filling gaps in financing for these communities, supporting development and creating employment in kingdoms that have welcomed persons from the diaspora home and recognised them through enstoolment as members of their communities.
EDUCATION
The GADK supports education projects in the Royal Nation of Pokomo Communities in Kenya and in the Ateker nation in Uganda. Full scholarships are offered to students attending the Kumi School of Nursing in Uganda and donations of medical supplies and sporting equipment were made to the School in 2024. In order to alleviate the lack of running water at the School, the GADK donated and commissioned a rain water harvesting system in October 2024. Arrangements are being made for a similar system in the Pokomo royal kingdom.
In Uganda, the GADK has been providing support to Olio Primary and St. Elizabeth Secondary School in Serere. The Kingdom has donated several keyboards for music education, supplied football sporting gear and introduced the Acom Cup for competitions. The GADK also mobilised resources through fundraising in the diaspora and refurbished a classroom block that includes the principal’s office, where the roof had collapsed.
During a visit to the St. Elizabeth School in 2024, GADK royals discovered that the School was constructed with hazardous asbestos. The GADK is working to have this addressed urgently.
HEALTH
The GADK supports health projects in Kenya and Uganda. GADK members have visited the hospital in Serere at least once per year since 2023, providing vitally needed medical supplies and care packages for mothers and newborns on the Acom Maternity Ward. In 2023, the GADK provided solar powered lighting for the hospital compound to provide a safer environment for hospital staff.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
GADK royals have been reconnecting with communities in Kenya, Uganda and Nigeria. This has involved participating in a range of community events in sports and culture and enstoolment ceremonies. In the Royal Nation of Pokomo Communities, the GADK has donated several sewing machines, provided building materials to finish a Mosque and is making arrangements to provide running water solutions for schools in need of support.
In Uganda, pledges have started to come in and stones were laid to signal our commitment to building a Community Centre in Serere for education and recreation programmes. Royals have adopted young children at the orphanage in Serere and sewing machines were donated to the Kumam Kingdom that has also warmly welcomed the diaspora home.
